Common name: Bee Pollen. Also called “Nature’s Perfect Foodâ€, Fountain of youthâ€, Ambrosia of the Gods, and the Greeks called it “Nectar of the Godsâ€.
Properties: Nutrient source, immune stimulant, antioxidant, and a diuretic.
Parts used: It is a collection of pollen from the flower nectar.
Systems affected: Digestive and Immune
Folk history and use:
Pollen consists of plant pollens gathered by worker bees mixed with nectar and bee saliva. They pack this combination into a granule that sticks to its back legs and carried back to the hive and fed to the male drones. It is collected by placing a screen in front of the hive entrance. As the bees travel through the screen it scrapes the crystals off of their legs.
It was used as a rejuvenator with the Egyptians and Ancient Chinese. Athletes used pollen for increased performance of strength, endurance, energy and speed.
Uses: Pollen has traditionally been used to treat allergies, to improve stamina and longevity. It is also used in the treatment of fatigue, sexual dysfunction, poor memory and convalescence.
Definite Actions: Nutrient source: It is made up of 55% carbohydrates, 35% proteins, 2% fatty acids, 3% minerals and vitamins and 5% other substances.
Allergy hypo sensitization: used to increase ant allergic properties to enhance the immune system against allergies to pollen. Types of pollen vary with location. Pollens gathered from the desert climates are highly prized for allergy remedies since deserts are considered hypoallergenic.
Builds immune system; as an immune system builder, bee pollen is thought to have the ability to correct body chemistry and eliminate unhealthy conditions. It has the ability to throw off poisons and toxic materials from the body. Radiation and chemical pollutants are known as the most severe stressors to your immune system. Side effects of radiation treatment decrease the body’s production of blood cells and nutrients in the body.
APHA class: 1 (natural food)
Contraindications: Use with caution if you are allergic to pollens or bee stings.
Do not heat bee pollen, as it will loose its potency. NSP bee pollen is naturally dried to preserve vital enzymes.
Side effects: No known interactions with other drugs, vitamins or supplements.
Pollen grains have a protective coat that makes them very durable. Two hundred year old intact pollen grains have been identified in rock samples. Bee saliva provides enzymes to dissolve this coat and free up the contents of the pollen grains. The human digestive system can also provide these enzymes, but pollen gathered by bees is more bio-available.
Pollen is an excellent source of protein. It has more protein than beef, eggs or cheese. Also contains 22 amino acids, rich in B vitamins, enzymes, trace elements, 27 mineral salts, vitamins A, C, D, and E, Lecithin, Beta-carotene, selenium, Lycopene and flavenoids, plus much, much more.
Pollen has superb anti-microbial and antibacterial properties that include the ability to inhibit Salmonella, E.Coli, Shigella, Candida, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. Less known is its ability to treat burns and wounds including diabetic ulcers to gangrene. Burn patients that used pollen topically recovered 50% faster with less scarring. Accelerates wound healing and prevents infections, even those resistant to antibiotics whether viral or fungal.
